About the Fish

Miami Tuna Fishing

Tuna are among the most prized offshore fish available to anglers fishing out of Miami. Known for their speed, power, and exceptional table quality, these hard-fighting pelagic predators provide exciting action throughout the year. Blackfin tuna are the most common species found offshore, although larger tuna occasionally move through South Florida waters depending on seasonal conditions.

One of the biggest draws of tuna fishing is the intensity of the fight. Tuna are built for speed and endurance, often making blistering runs immediately after being hooked. Even smaller fish can deliver battles that leave anglers exhausted and reaching for the rod again.

Miami's offshore waters offer excellent tuna habitat thanks to the nearby Gulf Stream. Current edges, deep reefs, wrecks, and offshore bait concentrations frequently hold feeding fish. Tuna travel in schools and can be located by watching for diving birds, surface activity, or thick bait. Captain Orly runs these grounds out of Dinner Key Marina, a short hop from Coconut Grove fishing charters docks.

Our vertical jigging charters have become one of the most effective ways to target tuna offshore. Fast-moving metal jigs imitate fleeing baitfish and trigger aggressive strikes. Live bait fishing is equally productive, especially around structure where tuna gather to feed on pilchards and speedos.

Early morning trips can be especially productive, though tuna may feed throughout the day depending on weather and water. The constantly shifting nature of offshore fishing makes every trip unique, which is why a full day offshore charter gives the best odds of connecting with a school. Tuna also share the same blue water as Miami wahoo fishing targets, so mixed-bag days are common in the cooler months.

Tuna are highly regarded for their eating quality. Fresh fillets are excellent grilled, seared, smoked, or served as sushi and sashimi. Their rich flavor and firm texture make them one of the most sought-after catches for anglers who enjoy bringing home fresh seafood, and we fillet your fish dockside. Combining incredible fights with premium table fare, tuna offer the complete offshore experience.
