The Fort Lauderdale Fishery
What makes this coast special is how little water separates the flats from the blue. Offshore, the reef edge and the Gulf Stream sit a short run out. That is where sailfish stack up along the reef in the winter, and mahi and wahoo push through over the spring and summer.

Reading the Water Off Fort Lauderdale
Fishing off Fort Lauderdale runs into the same wind-against-current problem the whole coast shares. A northeast wind blowing over the north-flowing Gulf Stream stands the reef edge up into a short, steep chop, and on those days the offshore run is uncomfortable. When that happens we fish the lee or move the day inshore, where the Intracoastal and the bays stay protected and the snook and tarpon keep eating.
Summer brings the other constant, which is weather. Afternoon thunderstorms build off the Everglades and drift east, so we push departures early to fish the calm morning hours before the sky turns. Timing the trip to the tide and the forecast is most of the job, and it is the part worth handing to someone who runs this water every week.
