The Window That Matters
Sailfish are catchable off Miami most of the year. That is not the same as worth planning a trip around.
The real season runs November through April. Inside that, the best fishing clusters around the fronts, and that is what you want to aim at.
Miami has an advantage almost nowhere else does. The Gulf Stream swings close to the beach, so the fish are a short run out rather than a long slog.
Cold Fronts Turn It On
A front drops through, the wind swings hard out of the north, and the whole fishery reorganizes.
North wind against the north-flowing Gulf Stream stacks the seas up and pushes bait tight against the reef edge. The sailfish follow the bait.
The day the front passes and the day after are often the best of the month. It is also when the ocean is least comfortable, which is the trade.
This is exactly why we watch the forecast instead of the calendar. A mild January week can be slower than a rough December morning.
Month by Month
November is the opener. The first real fronts arrive, the water starts cooling, and the fish show up.
December through February is the heart of it. This is when the tournaments run and when multiple-fish days actually happen.
March and April taper but still produce, often with cleaner weather and lighter boat traffic. Some of the most pleasant sailfish days happen here.
Summer is not sailfish season. That is when we point people at mahi instead, and nobody complains.
How We Fish the Peak
Kites. We fly baits from kites so they dangle on the surface, splashing, unable to sound, looking exactly like a panicked fish.
Live goggle eyes and threadfin herring are the currency. A fresh, lively bait outfishes a tired one by a wide margin, so bait catching is part of the job.
Then you wait, and it is worth it. A sailfish lighting up behind a kite bait and crushing it on the surface is the reason people book this trip.

Book the season, stay flexible on the day. That is the honest advice.
